Skilled migration data has been released by the Australian Bureau of Statistics which reveals some fun facts about the people that choose Western Australia as their home to work and live. The below skilled migration data captures a broad snapshot of permanent migrants arriving in WA between 2000 to 2016.
Did you know?
- People from the UK represented the largest group who chose to work and live in WA, accounting for 60,000 (19 per cent) of people migrating through the permanent skilled migration program.
- People from India accounted for the next largest group at 10 per cent of WA’s permanent skilled migration figures followed by South Africans, Filipinos and Chinese at 8 per cent, 7 per cent and 5 per cent respectively.
Amanda Davies, a Demographer from Curtin University’s School of Built Environment commented on the skilled migration data saying, “Perth is well known as a location for people from the UK, who identify WA and Perth as suiting their desired lifestyle. And it’s a similar story for people moving from South Africa and India.” Surely it must also have something to do with the iconic white beaches and golden sunshine Western Australia has become known for!
Amanda Davies also emphasised that over the course of 2000-2016, migrants from 212 different countries were welcomed into WA. She says, “This makes us quite diverse – we haven’t just drawn skilled migrants from one place.”
Some of the migrant groups from the 212 countries included Nicaragua, Gibraltar, Luxembourg, Haiti, Panama, Madagascar, Vanuatu, Paraguay, Guatemala, Iceland and Burmuda.
