Under the plan, migrants willing to work regionally could have their visa approved in a matter of weeks instead of months. The plan will also allow more regional migration agreements to be established, which will also allow local councils to hire skilled migrants. Faster visa processing and more opportunities for migrants to work in regional areas
In addition to faster visa processing for businesses, as per our previous article, many of the regional migration agreements being established will also provide migrants a pathway to permanent residence. With permanent residence pathways tightening due to recent skilled visa changes, this could be a valuable incentive for new skilled migrants, as well as for businesses wanting to attract and retain a stable workforce in regional areas.
Immigration Minister, David Coleman says the Government will be consulting with local councils to determine ways in which migrants can assist with labour shortages and boost the economies of regional areas.
Mr Coleman says, “Our officers will be on the ground to discuss regional migration opportunities with regional employers and communities, and also to hear first-hand the local labour issues they face.”
